Do e-ink displays need continuous power?
An e-ink panel can retain a written image without continuous power to maintain that image. That does not mean a complete wireless nameplate operates without a battery.
Clear information. No display cable.
Replaceable batteries · wireless updates
The panel and the complete device are different
E Ink describes the image-retention property as bistability. Energy is needed to change the displayed information, while holding the written image is a different state.
A complete sign also contains control electronics and a radio. Receiving new content, processing a button press and operating an optional LED still require energy. System battery life therefore depends on much more than the static display.
Visible content can outlast live information
If a battery is depleted, an e-ink panel may keep showing its previous view. That is useful for a stable room name, but a retained “Available” message must not be mistaken for proof that a calendar connection is still active.
When commissioning a reservation sign, define the behaviour around missed updates. Ask how the system identifies an offline plate and what an administrator or user can rely on when content has not been refreshed.
Build a realistic use profile
Count expected calendar changes, refreshes and button actions, and include radio conditions at the actual installation points. A mostly static office label has a different use profile from a busy room-booking plate.
Electronic Nameplate targets up to approximately two years with replaceable batteries under a defined normal-use profile. Final battery life and update behaviour remain subject to validation; the design does not remove the need for a maintenance owner.
Questions, answered.
Can I remove the battery and keep using the buttons?
No. Retaining an image is not the same as powering the radio, controller or button functions.
