What is e-ink? A workplace signage glossary

E-ink is a form of electronic paper: a display technology that presents an image with a paper-like, reflective appearance. In workplace signage, it is used for information people read rather than moving video.

Why image retention matters

E Ink describes its panels as bistable: a written image can remain when power is removed. That property is useful for low-update information, but the surrounding electronics still need power to communicate and change the view.

What the term does not tell you

The word e-ink alone does not specify panel dimensions, resolution, update behaviour, supported colours or the battery life of a complete device. Compare those specifications separately. For example, a layout that reads comfortably on a 7-inch room sign may make the same text too small on a compact office plate. Design with the actual pixel dimensions, then check the result at the distance people will read it. A successful screen mock-up still needs an installation test in the intended light.

Electronic Nameplate’s proposed line uses black-and-white panels in three sizes. The smallest office panel is 240 × 416 pixels; the workspace panel is 400 × 300; the 7-inch room panel is 800 × 640. These differences affect layout and type size.

A good fit for readable, periodic information

Names, room numbers and reservation times are natural examples. Check the installed view under normal corridor light and avoid layouts that depend on constant animation. For a meeting-room sign, also consider how the system identifies information that has stopped updating.

Questions, answered.

Is e-ink the same as a backlit tablet?

No. The specified reflective signage panels should be assessed with the surrounding lighting, rather than as illuminated tablet screens.
