E-ink vs LCD room displays: choose for the information
E-ink and LCD can both put information outside a room, but they suit different content and installation priorities. Choose around readability, update behaviour and the available infrastructure rather than assuming one technology is best everywhere.

When a paper-like sign is a good fit
E-ink is useful for stable text and periodic status changes: a room name, office occupant or booking time. Its reflective appearance fits spaces where a glowing screen would be visually distracting. Check it in the corridor’s normal lighting.
The specified Electronic Nameplate panels are black and white. Design the hierarchy with type, spacing and clear labels. Do not depend on a red or green screen background to communicate availability.
When an illuminated display deserves consideration
An illuminated LCD can be useful where the installation needs bright colour, animation or a richer interactive interface. That may justify providing continuous power and the infrastructure required by the chosen device. These needs are different from periodically updated door signage.
Avoid comparing only purchase prices. Installation, powering, management and maintenance need to be included. Compare the actual products’ supported interaction, refresh behaviour and operating conditions; a technology label does not specify all of those details.
A practical comparison exercise
Mock up your real content on both formats. Include the longest room name and a busy schedule. View the designs at the intended distance under normal and low lighting, then ask whether the extra information is useful or simply makes the sign harder to scan.
- Content: periodic names and schedules, or continuously changing media?
- Lighting: externally lit corridor, or a need for an illuminated screen?
- Power: battery service, or a cable at each location?
- Interaction: a few physical actions, or a complex interface?
- Maintenance: battery changes, network support and device replacement?
Questions, answered.
Is an e-ink sign a video screen?
No. The proposed e-ink nameplates are intended for text, layouts and status updates rather than video or smooth animation.
